Gadgets are big time fashion statements in today’s lifestyle. Mobile phones, smart watches, laptops, headphones, tablets, all these have grown beyond their utility to become much more than that. You can wear the coolest clothes, and have a God-awesome swagger, but if you’re carrying some cheap mobile phone, you’re going down in the fashion world. No surprise then that most of these gadgets get sold on the basis of how they look rather than the functionalities. (I still remember the look on my husband’s face, when he asked me what type of laptop I wanted and I told him PINK!). Once we own these beauties, we want to safeguard these with the same love we accord our kids (ok, exaggeration, I know!).

Now, with the rain gods finally looking down on the Indian subcontinent with the haughty indulgence of those who know we are dependent on them (ooof!), we have started getting a fair amount of rains now. While rains bring greenery and the much needed temperature drop, electronic gadgets usually become the first victims. A drop of water seeping inside your phone or laptop during an unexpected downpour is enough to end its life.

But electronic companies are getting smarter too nowadays. They have started making cutting edge waterproof gadgets which are apparently indestructible by rain, sea, fire, dust hammers, screwdrivers, guns, cannonballs and whatnot. In fact, our prime minister’s car is more likely to be destroyed by a bullet than the smart phone in your hand (your hand would probably get smashed though, so don’t give this a try!).

So without much further ado, let’s look at the latest gadgets you should have that are survivable in the rains.

1. Phones

The smartphone is one of the first things that used to get damaged in rains. This is especially true for people who have to use their phones on the road. Their phones are prone to water damage. Sadly, no warranty covers this damage. However, Samsung Galaxy S7 and iPhone 7 both are now totally waterproof. They can withstand being submerged in up to 1.5 m of water for 30 minutes! The next time you drop your phone in a water-filled ditch, sell off one of your kidneys and buy any of these two. You can survive on one kidney and an awesome phone!

2. Headphones

You can stay connected to your phone with it inside your bag by using wireless headphones! Rest it snugly under your helmet so that you can continue listening to music (or talking to/fighting with your SO, whatever rocks your boat) while your phone sits safely inside the depths of your bag. Jabra makes cool water resistant headphones, too. Try the Jabra Elite 65t headphones on today!

3. Fitness tracker

Why should you hold back on your fitness routine in monsoons? Let your fitness tracker accompany you on your journey, no matter what season it is. The Xiaomi Mi Band – HRX edition comes with an IP67 certificate. It is dust and water resistant. It tracks your footsteps, heartbeat and calories. It also knows you are lazy, so it gives you reminders to get up and walk. It gives you indications for calls and messages. Leave your phone at home and work out outdoors in peace.

4. Camera

If you love traveling, monsoon is the perfect time to visit locales with lush greenery. A camera is a must-have on your journey for freezing memories. But any camera won’t do. You’ll only end up worrying about the camera getting spoiled than enjoying the trip. But cameras like the Nikon Coolpix AW130 for stills and the GoPro for videos are great in rains. They are totally waterproof and you can even shoot underwater with these! Have fun shooting those gorgeous underwater pics you only saw on professional sites!

5. Watch

Whether you wear a regular watch or a smartwatch, most likely it will get damaged in rains. Rainwater tends to seep in from the gap between your sleeve ends and gloves. The insides of your watch are very delicate. Even mild dampness can damage the jewels irreparably. They won’t run on clockwork anymore. Pick waterproof watches. Casio and FasTrack both have a water resistant range. There are smartwatches like Nixon Mission Action Sports Smartwatch A1167.10 that are absolutely tough and rugged to deal with any kind of weather. Invest in a good water resistant watch today!

6. E-book readers

If you love reading, you’ll know the sorrow of not being able to carry a paperback outside in case it gets drenched. An e-book reader is a blessing for such bookworms. Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite and Oasis are completely waterproof. Take your books with you wherever you go without worrying about spoiling them.

Rains are here for you to enjoy, not endlessly worry about your delicate gadgets. Invest in these, sit back and enjoy the monsoons while they last!
