Mana mandira… Tejane… ujalun dei sadhaka…what a divine song from the Marathi movie Katyar Kaljat ghusali.. The song was divine to hear and a spectacle to watch! This is what happens during fireflies festival. The beautiful fireflies lit up the entire screen and this was an indeed a visual treat. How many of you want to enjoy this divine beauty of nature in the real life? Then read about this fireflies festival happening in the jungles around Pune.
Fireflies are beetles which have lights in their abdomens. They emit this light to attract the opposite sex and the opposite sex responds by emitting light. This creates a wonderful scene for the onlookers. The Fireflies are best seen in the month of June in the jungles around Pune. When the rain gets heavy in the month of July, they vanish. Toranmachi Resort, Near Velha:

Rajmachi, Near Lonavala:

Rajmachi is a small village nestled in the beautiful Sahyadris. A guided tour is arranged specifically to watch this scene. The pickup is at Lonavala at 4.00 pm followed by snacks. The tour to Rajmachi starts in the evening where you get to witness the fireflies alongside as you walk from Tungarli dam to the Rajmachi village. This is followed by sumptuous dinner and relaxation. The package also includes the trek to Shivavardhan fort the next day.

Purushwadi, near Igatpuri:

This village has more than two thousane fireflies. Come to the village to experience the spectacle that these insects create. This place is closer to Pune and is a galore of fireflies. As the place is near to Pune, you can also plan of returning back instead of having night’s stay. Enjoy the “karwanda”(small jamuns) on the way and if you are lucky enough you might also spot a beautiful rainbow!
