Harriet was sulking in a corner. Her favorite doll had broken today. She was so mad at her brother! How could he just throw her off the roof like that. The poor wooden thing didn’t stand a chance! Her nose had broken off, and her hand was shaped weird. When she went to show it to her mom, crying, complaining about Tom, her mom pushed her away impatiently, saying it’s just a doll. ‘It’s not just a doll; Her name is Maria,’ she thought to herself, furiously. ‘People just don’t understand.
That doll was her best friend. Much as Lucy was, even better perhaps, as Maria would never leave town and go away like Lucy did. Maria was there with her through everything. Through all the bullying, all the quarrels, all the fights, all the crying. She would hug Maria and all would be better.
After some time, her mom came into the room, and pulled her close. ‘I’m sorry to have pushed you away, but I was busy working. Now, come downstairs. You have a present from somebody. I’m sure, you would soon forget all about Maria!’ Harriet was sure nothing of that sort would happen. But, she went downstairs all the same, and she couldn’t believe her eyes, when she saw what present she had been given!
