With devices coming into use for reading books, eBook reader apps have gained popularity. Many people, in fact, use eBook reader apps on their phones so that they can read anywhere anytime. Why haul around a heavy book everywhere when it can simply fit in your phone? (I remember having a physical copy of “The Suitable Boy” and taking it around with me everywhere. Ended up having a backache. The book is more than 1000 pages long.)

Whether you are in a train, a cab or simply waiting in a queue, pulling out a book to read is not difficult any longer! I even read in elevators and stairwells, but let’s not go there.

There are a variety of ebook readers for phones available in the market. Here are some of the best ones.

Amazon Kindle ebook Reader

If you have been reading for any amount of time, you must have come across the name Kindle. Kindle is to books what Amazon is to shopping; it provides you books in one place at a click of a button. The best thing about Kindle is that you don’t have to own a Kindle device to read. Simply install the Amazon Kindle app on your phone and access millions of books available online. And yes, Kindle offers free books too! You can sync your books across various devices on the app, bookmark, highlight and make notes too. If you have a Kindle device, your books will automatically be synced to that as well. There is an inbuilt dictionary and you can access Google search and Wikipedia also, making it a completely immersive reading experience.

Aldiko Book eReader

Aldiko is a great alternative to other ebook readers for reading ebooks in PDF and ePub formats. It does not store books automatically, this saving your memory. If you want to save a certain book, you can manually download/import them into the app. This helps you save your reading sessions as well. Aldiko offers various options like adjustable font size, font face, and background.

Moon+ Reader

This is a much-loved eBook reader app among bookworms. Moon+ Reader offers you control over the display settings, making reading enjoyable. There is a status bar that shows your reading progress within the current chapter along with the entire book. The app is available for free, though a pro version offers additional information like the number of books on your bookshelf, pages turned and reading hours. If you are an avid reader, Moon+Reader is great for you.

Cool Reader

Cool Reader has a fully customizable palette including text formatting for font size and extremely smooth scrolling. For those who read on the go, this app is sure to be a pleasure. Cool Reader is the only app that provides free text-to-speech. It also offers day/night toggle that makes reading at any time easy. You can read many formats like ePub, fb2, html, rtf, txt, etc. on Cool Reader.

FBReader

FBReader is an ebook reader that runs on all types of devices. You can use it devices that run on Android, Linux, Mac OS X, Windows, BlackBerry10 and other platforms. You can choose colours, fonts, sizes, animations, bookmarks, etc. according to your likes. The app organizes your library according to authors and titles for easy viewing. It supports many ebook formats and 29 languages as well!
